Blood Guards are humans bound by dark rites and placed under the influence of vrakhiri blood. The Xanthe encounter shown officially includes three dual-wielding guards stronger than ordinary humans.

Short answer. Trading directly into their armor and blocks drains Coen's stamina quickly. In Xanthe's encounter, the three guards must be handled before a direct duel with her begins.
